Sweet Pea Winnie Rogers
The result of my first attempt at breeding Sweet Peas. This beautifully fragrant Spencer offers eye catching marbled lavender flowers with a bright eye. This one won the National Sweet Pea Society’s Gower Cup for best new variety as long ago as 1999, at Cambridge Botanics. It’s been in the cupboard ever since!
Back then, my grandmother had recently passed away and when sorting through her things we found a Sunday School prayer book prize that was inscribed to “Winnie Rogers”. I had never known her as Winnie and it struck me as capturing a moment in time of the young girl, who I only knew in later life. Now, over a hundred years later I am again so proud to name and offer this beauty in her memory.
