Sweet Pea seeds harvested - October 2016

Activity moves inside at this time of the year. All the sweet peas that we have grown for seed have been harvested and are being cleaned; the small lots are shelled, sieved and sorted by hand and the larger quantities are threshed using a small combine harvester.

This is Odette sieving one of the new colours in the Balcony Series.

Our thoughts turn to the productions that take place in Malta and the United States because we need to send out stock seed in November. In Malta we grow sweet peas on the island of Gozo in small terrace fields while much larger fields are used in the USA. The picture below is Sweet Pea Little Red Riding Hood being produced in Malta next to some crops of Statice.
